Europeans grab a bigger slice of the US market

Volkswagen AG and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG led European auto makers' United States sales gains last month on demand for small cars and luxury sport sedans.

US sales for the 15 European makers rose 2.9 percent to 103,360 vehicles, according to Autodata Corp of Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey.

Sales by US-based makers, including General Motors Corp, fell 13 percent.

"Even though there was a month or two in the first half when some of the Europeans saw sales declining, overall the trend is strong," Wes Brown, an analyst at Los Angeles-based market researcher Iceology Inc, said yesterday.

Gains for Germany's Volkswagen and BMW in the US helped them weather a drop in their home market.

The German car makers association yesterday lowered its 2007 domestic forecast after a sales-tax increase led to a nine percent slump in first-half sales.

"The US market is particularly interesting for us," Matthias Wissman, the VDA car makers association president, said.

"We are well positioned in the US market."

European brands' US market share advanced 0.4 of a percentage point to 7.1 percent in June.

Asian auto makers boosted their share 5.4 points to a record 42.7 percent while their US rivals fell to 50.3 percent, according to data compiled by Bloomberg News.
